Fear or insecurity is a really bad starting point for communication.
After I realized that doctor's are people too, my life as a professional patient got a lot easier. I've been able to get to know some great human beings - who just happen to be medical professionals - and I've found out that sometimes they say quite intelligent things.
Recently I've started reading doctor's blogs too, and one of my favorites is Dr. Rob's: Musings of a Distractible Mind. Dr. Rob recently published a letter to chronic patients, which was a real eyeopener in many ways, and offering us patients an eerily new perspective. One of the things he writes about is how and why chronic patients scare doctors. I absolutely recommend you to read the whole letter, but I'm also going to repost the specific advice here in several posts as part of the "how to be a professional patient" topic.
